Diagnostics
The couse diagnostics is currently given by two professors: N. Lemoine and S. Hearaux. The course is divided into two sets of classes. The first 5 classes are given by professor heuraux and will discuss all kinds of diagnostics used in tokamak and stellerator devices. After 5 classes, Lemoine will discuss very basic data analysis techniques with you, including fourrier transforms, wavelet transforms, bayesian analysis etc. for another 5 classes. The exams of both parts are split.
The diagnostic system part of this is very heavy, it is alot of information, badly structured and very limited usefullness of the slides used by the professor. When working towards this exam, you will mainly read through books and papers for understanding of the matter. The book "Principles of Plasma Diagnostics" by I. H. Hutchinson will be your life saver. The data analysis is easier and more basic.
Exam
The exam for diagnostic systems exists of a few theory multiple choice questions, some of which are answered by the professor during class, so make sure you have good notes and a few excercises. During the year, professor Heuraux will provide you with old exams, it is strongly advised that you focus on solving these exams beforehand, as you are allowed to bring whatever you want to the exam (books, slides, papers, old exams, exercises,...). Basically, alot of work performed in advance means that you can just copy paste when doing your exam.
The exam for data analysis will take up less effort, the matter is easier, there are clear course notes and the exam is not too farfetched from what you have learned. Beware with the exam, as the formulation can be very difficult and unclear due to language issues.
The course is worth 3 ECTS
